Théâtre du 13e Art

Paris, France

Daniel Vaniche Architectes

Originally known as the Cinéma Grand Ecran, the new Théâtre du 13e Art is located in the heart of the Italie 2 shopping mall in Paris, originally designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange in the 1970s. With its 900 seats, the Théâtre du 13e Art is one of the largest theaters on the Left Bank of Paris. The theater, which reopened in September 2017, can host all types of amplified shows, from stand-up comedy to circus to amplified music concerts.

Theatre Projects provided all the acoustic design, including the acoustics of the room, the acoustics of the building as well as advice on noise and vibration control of the mechanical and scenographic equipment.

Finally, the original auditorium, being located above the Paris Metro, was built by Peter Rice as a box-in-a-box construction. As this did not seem to work as the subways had become very audible, we conducted a specific vibration study to establish that the existing box could in fact be retained and refurbished. Our study saved our client, Hammerson, several million euros on the cost of building a new box within the box.
