Sébastien Jouan is an acoustician, sound designer and sound artist with 25 years of international experience. His work focuses on the acoustic design of performing arts venues, higher-education buildings and projects requiring a creative approach to sound. He specialises in symphonic concert halls, opera houses, amplified venues and theatres, as well as museums, galleries, music conservatoires and temporary sound art installations.

He founded Studio Jouan in 2022. Previously, he established the acoustics division at Theatre Projects, where he was a Partner, Principal and Technical Director of the international acoustics team from 2014 to 2022.

Before joining Theatre Projects, Sébastien was Regional Director at AECOM from 2012 to 2014, leading the Arts & Culture work of its international acoustics practice and overseeing acoustic teams in France, the UK and the Middle East.

Earlier in his career, he spent 14 years with Arup Acoustics in London, Cambridge, New York and Glasgow. In Scotland, he led the acoustics team before directing the multidisciplinary Arts & Culture sector. He also worked extensively with Arup’s SoundLab and, in collaboration with the Digital Design Studio at the Glasgow School of Art, developed an early interactive 3D visual and acoustic immersion system. His work in auralisation was featured in WIRED in 2010.

Sébastien has taught at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London and, since 2018, at the Fontainebleau Schools of Music and Fine Arts. He previously served on the board of Cryptic in Glasgow and has collaborated with sound artist Bill Fontana, including as project manager for Silent Echoes : Notre Dame. He is also a co-author of David Staples’ Modern Theatres 1950–2020.

Since 2018, Sébastien is a tutor to musicians and architecture students at the Fontainebleau American Art Schools.
