Sébastien Jouan

Sébastien is an acoustician, sound designer and sound artist with a portfolio of international projects related to the acoustic design of performing art venues, higher education buildings or projects requiring creative acoustic design content. He is a specialist in the acoustic design of symphonic concert halls, opera houses, amplified halls and theatres as well as museums, galleries, music conservatoires and temporary sound art installations.

Sébastien has been working in the acoustic design industry for 25 years. He launched Studio Jouan in 2022. For further information on his project portfolio see sebastienjouan.com.

Previously, he started the acoustic division at Theatre Projects (TP) and was a partner, acoustic principal and technical director (2014-2022).

Prior to TP, he was Regional Director at AECOM (2012-2014), where he led the Arts & Culture division of the international acoustic team with offices in the UK, France, the Middle East, the US and Australia. He was also responsible for the acoustic teams based in France, the UK and the Middle East.

He also worked for 14 years at Arup Acoustics in their London, Cambridge, New York and Glasgow offices. In Scotland in 2006, he led the acoustic team before directing the multidisciplinary Arts & Culture sector from 2008. With Arup, he mainly worked on cultural projects and led the SoundLabs (ambisonic 3D sound auralisation studios) located in the UK. He also created, in collaboration with the Digital Design Studio at the Glasgow School of Art, the first SoundLab which integrated a 3D interactive vision/sound immersion system. As a specialist in auralisation, his work was featured in WIRED magazine in 2010. He has also tutored at the London Bartlett School of Architecture and was a board member of Cryptic in Glasgow, a contemporary art house offering performances combining music, sound, art and multimedia. Finally, he is also the project manager for sound artist Bill Fontana, most recently for Silent Echoes : Notre Dame.

Since 2018, Sébastien has tutored architecture and musician students at the Fontainebleau American Art Schools.

He is one of the co-authors of the recently published Modern Theatres 1950-2020 by David Staples and is also a member of the Editorial Team of ITEAC 2023.
