LSE Saw Swee Hock New Student Centre
London, UK
O’Donnell and Tuomey
Following the successful completion of the LSE New Academic Centre project with Grimshaw Architects, Arup was again called upon to provide a multidisciplinary design service with specialists in acoustics, theatre design, lighting, fire safety and disable access.
Sébastien Jouan, under the technical direction of Ian Knowles, was in charge of the acoustics but also the multidisciplinary project manager of the various Arup teams involved in the project.
From an acoustic point of view, the challenge was with the design of the large hall serving as a concert hall and nightclub for LSE students. The proximity of the Peacock Theatre required this space to be designed as a concrete box within a box in order to provide the necessary levels of acoustic insulation.
