Brian Katz
Acoustician
Since 1987, Brian F.G. Katz has been actively involved in various technical and academic areas of acoustics and audiovisual design. Brian worked from 1994 until 2000 in the USA, first as a consultant for K&K Consulting, Artec Consultants Inc. and then for Arup Acoustics where he met Sébastien. As of 2001, granted a Chateaubriand fellowship from the French embassy ‘s Mission for Science and Technology, he moved to France and worked for the Musical Acoustics Laboratory of the Paris VI University, focusing on the idiosyncratic perceptions of spatialisation’s miscellaneous technics, developing the concept and building a 3D-sound auralisation studio. From 2001 until 2002, he worked at IRCAM, Paris. He has been working at the CNRS, LIMSI laboratory from 2003 to 2011 and is now head of the Sound Spaces team at the Institut d’Alembert of the Sorbonne University. He has collaborated with Sébastien on several occasions when Sébastien was still at Theatre Projects and their paths also crossed when they were both working at Notre Dame in Paris.
Since 2022, he collaborates with Studio Jouan on projects requiring his expertise.
His areas of technical expertise include large and small room acoustics, signal processing, hardware–software development tools, acoustic scale modelling, acoustical computer modelling and acoustical measurements.
Brian F.G. Katz is one of the most renowned international specialists in acoustical measurements and analysis and was the initiator and author on several round robin evaluations of computer modelling and acoustic measurements.
